Dr. Deborah Joyner followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a dentist.
Originally from the Cedar Rapids/ Marion area, she attended the University of Iowa and then went on to receive her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry. Dr. Joyner graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1992 and built her current Cedar Rapids office in 2000.

She enjoys putting her time and energy into constantly learning new procedures and technologies, which puts her on the cutting edge of dentistry. For her, dentistry is really about getting to know what her patients need and want.

MEET THE JOYNER DENTAL ARTS SMILE TEAM
I was born and raised in Manchester, moved to Cedar Rapids for school, and have lived here ever since. I have one cat named Stew and one dog named Maggie.
Why did you choose dentistry? I always enjoyed going to the dentist, and I loved the hygienist I had growing up.
What is the best part of your job? Getting to know and help my patients.
What aspect of your personality adds the most value to the office? I like to be serious and get things done, but I’m also relaxed which patients enjoy.
What do you do outside of the office? Travel, ride bikes, go boating, hang out with friends, and take my dog to the dog park.
What’s one item from your bucket list? Skydive.
I am from Northeast Iowa. I was the eleventh child, and my parents raised us all on the family farm. I am now married and have three grown children.
Why did you choose dentistry? When choosing a career path, I considered nursing and teaching. I settled on dental hygiene because it has elements of both of these professions, and I have always enjoyed cleaning, so dental hygiene was the perfect fit!
What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is assisting my patients in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases that directly impact their overall health.
What aspect of your personality adds the most value to the office? I am passionate about helping people. I enjoy working with people one-on-one to reach their optimal dental health.
What do you do outside of the office? I enjoy spending time with my family, baking, sewing, gardening, listening to my vinyl record collection, and tending to my backyard chickens.

I am originally from Marion, Iowa and graduated from the Kirkwood Dental Assisting program in 1996. I enjoy spending time with my kids and helping with their activities.
Why did you choose dentistry? I enjoy taking care of people and find teeth very interesting.
What is the best part of your job? Helping patients meet their needs and getting to know our patients better every time we see them. Plus, I get to hang out with Dr. Joyner.
What aspect of your personality adds the most value to the office? I can empathize with patients and I’m always willing to learn new techniques to help better their care.
What do you do outside of the office? Coach softball, garden, run (slowly), teach religion at our local church, and garden.
What would be the theme song of your life? All of them. I’m obsessed with movie music.
I grew up in Williston, ND, and graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in Family Economics and minors in Business Administration and Gerontology. I moved to Cedar Rapids in 1995. I am married to my husband, Brady, and have two daughters, Aren and Maci, who are in college.
Why did you choose dentistry? It presented me with a new challenge and an opportunity to learn and grow.
What is the best part of your job? I love our patients. I enjoy visiting with them and building connections with them.
What aspect of your personality adds the most value to the office? I am very friendly and outgoing. And I am willing to go above and beyond for our patients, team, and doctor.
What do you do outside of the office? I enjoy spending time with family and friends and going to events around the Cedar Rapids area, like trivia nights, music events, and theater performances. I especially love biking on a beautiful day with my family and friends. I am in a very fun book club and enjoy reading/discussing a variety of books.
What’s one item from your bucket list? To travel internationally with my family.
