How Your Cedar Rapids Dentist Can Save a Knocked Out Tooth

Having a tooth knocked out is a legitimate fear that most of us have, especially as adults. Some of us even dream about having our teeth falling or being knocked out which leaves us with the fear that nothing can be done.

In reality, having a tooth knocked out doesn’t mean your smile is altered forever. If you or your child has a tooth knocked out, following the proper emergency steps can save the tooth and allow it to be replanted.

Today, we’re discussing what you should do if your tooth is knocked out.

What to do

First and foremost, it’s important to act quickly. Get to your Cedar Rapids family dentist in 30 minutes or less and follow these tooth-saving steps:

  1. Handle the tooth by the crown

Find the tooth as soon as it’s knocked out if you can and pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface). Handling it by the root can cause some serious bacteria problems down the road.

  1. Rinse the tooth with water

Is the tooth dirty? Use only water to remove any dirt or debris. Don’t use soap or chemicals to clean the tooth. Wrap it in a tissue or cloth when you’re done and don’t scrub it.

  1. Place the tooth back in the socket

Attempt to put the tooth back in the socket as soon as you can. Gently push it in with your fingers (by handling only the crown). You can also position it above the socket and close your mouth gently.

Place your fingers on the crown and hold it in place. You can also bite down slowly.

  1. Maintain moisture

If you can’t get to your Cedar Rapids family dentist right away, keep the tooth moist at all times. If the tooth can’t be replaced right away, keep it in:

  • The socket
  • Milk
  • Your mouth next to your cheek
  • In an emergency tooth preservation kit (like Save-a-Tooth®)

  1. See your family dentist
