Your child will soon be headed back to school, which means now is the perfect time to have a chat with your family dentist.
Sending your child off with their backpack, supplies, books, and pencils is one thing, but it’s another to start the year off right by having all their health-related boxes checked.
Even if your Cedar Rapids school doesn’t require a back-to-school dental exam, it’s a good idea to have one so you can speak with your dentist about any concerns. Your family dentist will be able to spot any areas of concern and make plans to address it before school starts.
Did your child’s dental habits fall by the wayside over the summer? Now is the time to get them back on track.
When you visit your team of family dental care professionals, it’s easy to forget what you should ask. Once you book your child’s appointment at Joyner Dental Arts, here are some good topics you can bring up:
How is my child’s dental health?
At Joyner Dental Arts in Cedar Rapids, Dr. Joyner looks at the big picture of your child’s mouth. She’ll assess your child’s teeth and gums to make sure everything is lining up correctly and that the bite is good. She’ll also let you know if there are concerns regarding future dental issues.
Will my child receive a cleaning today?
Your child could be the best brusher in the world but we’re still going to clean their teeth. Brushing twice a day is a perfect routine, but even that doesn’t eliminate ALL of the bacteria that leads to cavities. Our dental hygienists will clean your child’s teeth, floss, and polish them so more of the cavity-causing bacteria that leads to gum issues is removed.
Does my child need an x-ray?
X-rays are a common practice because they let Dr. Joyner see if your child’s teeth are developing properly. She’ll use the x-ray to determine whether the roots are healthy and if there’s any tooth decay. You should know that your child won’t receive an x-ray at every visit. Typically, they’re done annually or only when necessary.
Does my child’s mouthguard need adjusting?
Do you have a child that plays sports year-round? Now is the perfect time to ensure their mouthguard still fits properly. If your child is in the middle of a growth spurt, losing teeth, or getting new ones, their mouthguard might need to be redone. Bring it with you to the appointment to have Dr. Joyner take a look.
Does my child need any sealants?
Sealants keep your child from getting cavities, but they’re not substitutes for routine brushing and flossing. Sealants are thin protective coatings that are placed on the chewing surface of your child’s teeth. Their goal is to prevent cavity-causing bacteria and bits of food from settling into the grooves of your child’s teeth since it’s difficult for a toothbrush to reach those areas.
Sealants will prevent cavities from forming. They’ll also help any existing spots of decay from getting worse. Ask Dr. Joyner if your child needs any sealants.
